Trying to Sleep with Gingersnap
May 12th 2009 21:00
Hanging out at Brett’s house one night, I started feeling tired and tried to take a nap. Seeing me supine, Gingersnap stepped over me and nestled beside me, purring loudly in my ear.
Have you ever had a cat literally walk all over you? They are not as light as you’d think. I could feel the pressure from Gingersnap’s cool paws pressing down hard on me. I don’t know why he just doesn’t go around me but then again, from his perspective, walking over my chest is the easiest way to get to where he wants to be: next to my right shoulder.
If that wasn’t enough to keep me awake, he then put his paws on my shoulder, digging his claws into me.
When my ex-neighbour’s cats used to do this, she would say, “They want contact. They think you are one of them. Cats can dig their claws into each other and it doesn’t hurt them but they don’t realise it’s not the same for humans.” Tell me about it!
Brett says Gingersnap does this to him every night, which is why he sleeps with a shirt on, to protect his shoulder from his claws.
In the end, I didn’t end up taking a nap. It wasn’t long before Butterscotch made his way next to his brother and the two started licking each other. Butterscotch soon fell asleep but Gingersnap continued to clean the back of his neck. I had my hand near the cats and from time to time Gingersnap would accidentally lick my finger. Each time this happened, he would pause and look at me as if to say my finger doesn’t taste as good as his fur.
