Vale Peter Warner

Several weeks ago, Books Kinokuniya had a 20% off sale which I used the opportunity to purchase a book called The Moon Cottage Cats vol 2 by Marilyn Edwards, simply because I fell in love with the illustrations by the late Peter Warner. Perusing through his web site, I found an image of a book I had seen many times at Berkulouw books in Paddington called The Book of the Cat. It turns out he had create the artwork for that book as well!
I went to Berkulouw. It was still on the shelf. Money was tight so I had to leave it there. Two weeks later, I went back and it was still there. I bought it. I also found a book about birds of paradise. At $35, I have to wait until I got paid. I then asked one of the sales staff if he could hold it. To my surprise, he said yes and he could hold it for a couple of weeks as “because it’s a secondhand book, it wouldn’t be in great demand. Some of them will sit on the shelves for years.” Like the book I had just purchased.
That said, the BOP book was by renowned natural history artist John Gould. Sooner or later a BOP/John Gould admirer was bound to come across it and it would be gone.
Still, it’s good to know that I could still buy books and not blow my budget just by putting them on hold. Goodbye credit card. Hello, lay-bys and holds.
