What I Want for my Birthday: A Donation to the RSPCA
August 7th 2008 21:00
Now that I’m in my thirties, birthdays are getting to the point where they’re no longer important. Being able to get together with my friends is far more important than the presents.
Since I’ve turned thirty I’ve been asking my friends not to buy me anymore presents. But they still do year after year. I think it may have to do with the embarrassment of showing up empty handed, even though it was at my request.
So this year I’ve asked my friends to make a donation to an animal charity such as the RSPCA or the Cat Protection Society as my present. It will be my way of saving my time-strapped friends the hassle of trying to choose a present for me and at the same time, our way of giving back to the community. Knowing that the donation may be helping an injured animal get proper veterinary treatment or cover the cost of feeding strays means more to me than any present.
If I ever got married (which I doubt as I don’t believe in marriage) I would want all the guests to do the same thing. After all, by the time we reach your thirties, most of us would have found a job by now and are living away from our parents so we already have most of the things we need. What it comes down to is getting the things we want such as designer handbags or a plasma TV. Yes, they would be nice to have but we can easily get by without them.
