What’s Wrong with this Picture?
March 16th 2009 21:00
In a recent issue of Cat Fancy magazine there was a story on how to photograph cats. The writer said the glowing eye effect that happens after photographing cats with the flash on was a flaw and gave pointers on how to avoid this. Since when was the glowing eye effect bad?
The other complaint I get is that the cats look possessed.
Why all the fuss?
My ex-neighbour also liked to photograph her cats with the flash on. She thought their glowing eyes contrasted their black fur in spectacular fashion. Back then, I knew little about cats so my neighbour had to explain to me that it was normal for cats’ eyes to light up this way when photographed.
What I’d like to know is whether or not the light from the flash bothers cats. On a recent trip to Taronga Zoo, I noticed there were signs asking people not to use the flash in the rodent enclosure as their eyes were sensitive to light.
If that applied to cats, I certainly would stop photographing my favourite boys with the flash. The trouble is, I usually see them at night time so if I used flash-less photography, I would end up with a whole stack of dim photographs of my beloved babies.

All of mine quite enjoy photo time, Rowdy especially poses for all his shots, and his eyes glow the most lovely green if you snap him from the right angle.
