White Lion Cubs Abandoned by Their Mother

July 16th 2008 21:00
I was saddened to read about a lioness who, after giving birth to four white lion cubs, took one look at them and didn’t want anything to do with them. How mean. They are so beautiful. At first I thought maybe the mother was thinking along survival-of-the-fittest lines and thought four white lions wouldn’t survive long. But that doesn’t make sense as they were born in a zoo. Another possibility is she was so freaked out by their alien (to her) appearance that she thought, forget it. Nature can be cruel.

Despite the mother’s misgivings, I think the cubs are beautiful creatures. I love their whiter-than-white colour. It gives them a slightly surreal appearance. According to Wikipedia, their colour is caused by a recessive gene i.e. both parents must carry the gene in order to create such a mutation. Wikipedia says the gene can cause the colour to range from blonde to nearly white and even to red! That’s one animal I’d definitely want to see.

Sadly it can happen. Life on a farm shows you mother nature is cruel. We usually disagree with her constantly.

I had a friend who grew up on a farm and she learned to avoid getting emotionally attached to the animals as most of them ended up at the slaughterhouse. When I hear that I'm glad I don't live on a farm.

Everyone runs their farm differently. It saddens me deeply to see humans shooting and poisoning to run the place - it is far more cost effective and efficient to use the natural eco system. Pests - animal or plant - can be discouraged by using environmental controls rather than just spraying poison or laying traps. I detest poison, abhor traps.

And the kind of farm matters in a big way. If your money maker is beef or lamb, yes, its a good idea to never get attached to the animals. Even in a dairy farm hundreds of calves are slaughtered regularly - we drink the milk meant for them after all. My farm is a rescue centre, so we dont have that problem, but I hope in the future to have a few chickens to eat just so I can break free from the supermarket chain. I KNOW how cruel the meat market is...I sometimes feel sick walking through the meat department, not because they are killed, but because they are killed in such great number merely for conveniance.

But I believe that vegetables have feelings.

Vegetables have feelings? Interesting concept. If you ever watched In Seatch of... back in the '70s/'80s you would have seen an episode on this. Someone experimented with plants by playing rock and classical music. The rock plants moved away from the speakers while the classical ones moved towards them.

Theres also experiments with people projecting their aura to plants. The ones who get the attention grow better and stronger compared to those that dont. Its interesting.
