Why? Why?

Every Tuesday is crucial TV viewing for me. This is because of RSPCA Animal Rescue. I particularly enjoy the cat stories for obvious reasons: They make me feel connected to Butterscotch and Gingersnap. That said, on Tuesday night I was saddened to see a ginger cat lose his paw after he caught his hind leg in an animal trap. Eventually the RSPCA vet amputated the rest of his leg. Why? I wanted to cry out. Why did this have to happen to a poor defenceless animal?
The RSPCA officer said people with fruit trees often have traps to stop animals from stealing their fruit. Surely there must be more humane ways of doing this than by setting traps that not only injure animals, but possibly humans. Can you imagine a small child getting caught in one? I shudder at the thought.
I was also not impressed with the Victorian Department of Primary Industries’ guidelines on what to do if a non-target animal is caught in a trap: They recommend shooting it:

How about not allowing traps to be used in the first place?
