Why Would Anyone Steal a Sniffer Dog?

I was flicking through the Wentworth Courier when I came across this story on page 13 of the 11/6/08 edition:

My mind is just boggling at the possibilities. Why would anyone want to do this? Because he thought the dog was cute? I guess the most obvious reason is probably the man did it because he was trying to protect his drug-loaded friends from a drug bust. How’s that for loyalty?
The police are denying the incident but then again, why wouldn't they? It’s hardly good PR for the police to admit they were outsmarted by someone. I wonder where the dog is. I hope it’s okay. I know from talking to people (especially around the Kings Cross area) that some people hate sniffer dogs but I don’t mind them. But then again, they’ve never had a reason to come near me. When I used to catch the train, I’d get off at Kings Cross station and would sometimes see these cute Labradors sniffer dogs. I would look at them and admire their cuteness even though I know I shouldn’t in case they happen to approach me and the police then think I’ve got drugs on me.
