Would you Have Your pet Attend Your Funeral?

Like many others, I am addicted to true crime shows. Watching Beyond the Darklands one night, I watched in horror but nevertheless eyes glued to the TV set while the presenter detailed the gruesome details of Australian serial killer Peter Dupas’s murders. Towards the end of the show, footage was shown of victim Nicole Patterson’s funeral. Her dog was allowed to attend the funeral and when her coffin appeared, it led out a long, loud mournful howl. It was a very sad but beautiful idea and it made me wonder how many of us 1) expect to die before our companion animals do and 2) plan to include them in our funerals. I’m guessing here but I would imagine the answers to both questions would be not many. Like the death of a child, no one expects to be outlived by their furry friends. I certainly haven’t thought about including Butterscotch and Gingersnap in my funeral, should I go before them. Most of it is due to their dislike of travel; Brett says they miaow like crazy whenever he drives them to the vet. The idea of getting them to travel to my funeral sounds distressing. That said, I could think of other ways of letting them say their final goodbyes.
Have you thought about including your companion animal in your funeral ceremony? If not, I am sure you are not the only one.
