Would you Leave Your dog on a Collapsing Bridge?

Since my colleague and I tend to watch the same TV shows, it goes without saying we spend most mornings discussing what was on TV the previous night.
That morning, I was telling him about a show I saw called Destroyed in Seconds which showed a clip of a man who was driving a car across the Tarcoma Narrows Bridge when the bridge started bucking and swaying wildly. How this incompetently constructed bridge managed to pass development approval is beyond my imagination. About halfway across the bridge the man stops his car and decides to run for his life, leaving his barking dog inside the car. A second man, from behind, tries to rescue the dog but by the time he approached the car, the bridge started to collapse and the man had no choice but to turn back. The poor dog and car then fell and sank to the bottom of the ocean.
“I don’t get why the first man didn’t just take his dog with him,” I said to my colleague.
“He could have opened the car door,” agreed my colleague.
“The presenter didn’t say how big the dog was. If it was a small one the man could have just picked it up and taken it with him.”
“Even if it was a big one, the dog can still move,” said my colleague.
Exactly! Why would you just abandon the dog, knowing it was doomed?
