Would you Leave Your Dogs $700,000?

Now I wish I was a dog. Two dogs named Wags and Deefa inherited $700,000 when their wealthy owner passed away six months ago.

This then begs the question: would you leave your estate to your pets and, if so, how much?
Some people might think it is extreme to leave such a fortune to two dogs but if someone sees their pets as surrogate children, it makes perfect sense. After all, most people leave their estate to their (human) loved ones so why shouldn’t this be any different for companion animals?
I wonder if, say, my friend Brett would leave his estate to his cats. Given that Brett hasn’t got many assets, this is a hypothetical question but I’m sure, given his love for Butterscotch and Gingersnap, that he would at least, make plans for someone to care for them should he die before they do. Money doesn’t necessarily have to come into this. I would be one of those people who would only be too happy to take them should they need a home. Ditto my ex-neighbour’s cats, Higgins and Miggins.
If I had a companion animal I would definitely arrange for someone to take them. I would also put aside money for this. The most likely candidate would be my best friend Andrea, as she owns her place, has a huge backyard and is an animal lover. She has also has a lot of experience in looking after cats – and that also includes kittens. Not only that, Andrea is very reliable so I know any of my furry babies would be in good hands.
