The bond between animal and human is indeed a strong one.
Bored one day at work, I was joking around with one of my colleagues. I held up a photo of Butterscotch and said he was my boyfriend. My colleague burst out laughing.
That led to me taking the joke a little bit further by saying I would marry Butterscotch if I could. Again, my colleague thought this was funny but it makes me wonder: Surely I’m not the only one who feels this way about an animal. Would you marry your pet? Do you feel such a strong bond to any of your pets?
In these modern times when people are becoming more isolated than ever, this is a question that must crop up in some animal lovers. I certainly feel a strong connection to Butterscotch and Gingersnap, even though they are my friend’s cats. Apart from my ducks, I’ve never felt this kind of connection with any other animal. Fellow animal lovers like my neighbour understand this connection but I’ve also noticed that those who don’t have pets or appreciate the wonders of the animal kingdom don’t get it. I find this very sad as my pet ducks taught me about friendship and also empathy. These are important lessons in life.
I could picture myself walking down the altar with Butterscotch beside me. He would have a fancy collar around his golden neck and a black tuxedo on. I would be dressed in a white lace gown. We would stand next to each other and say our vows. (Well, I would. Butterscotch, not being much of a talker, would emit the occasional beep.) Then we will be cat and wife, or human and husband. Hey, we would be husband and wife!
