Zoe the Earless Kitten
June 16th 2009 21:00
Like many stories of animal cruelty, this almost made me cry. A mother and daughter find a kitten in a dumpster. Some mongrel had cut off her ears and left her there to die. The pair decides to adopt the kitten and write a book about her crazy antics which include jumping into the bathtub when it is being occupied and a fondness for being carried upside down. I don’t know any cat who would tolerate the latter except for Gingersnap and that’s because I have a photo of Brett holding him sideways. The pose looks awkward as Gingersnap has his head dangling upside down over Brett’s arm. Meanwhile, his lower legs are sticking up in the air. The funny thing is that Gingersnap doesn’t look terrified.
Surprisingly, when if you check out the gallery of Zoe’s pictures, she doesn’t look as “earless” as you would expect. Okay, you do see a cat without ears but her head isn’t entirely round; where the ears used to be are now tufts of cat hair. I can’t imagine how painful it must have been to lose her ears, nor can I imagine how little empathy someone could have in order to abuse a harmless animal. What’s amazing is her resilience and ability to trust another human being again. I hope she knows not all humans are cruel and how lucky she is to be given a second chance at life.
