Do You Think It’s Okay for Your Pet to Eat You if You Die?

I know, I know. This is one macabre topic but it had me thinking. A few months ago my neighbour and I were talking about a story we heard about someone who died and their dog was starving so it started to eat its owner. My neighbour argued that the dog wasn’t being cruel; it was starving and was forced to survive. Not only that, she said if she died unexpectedly and her cats were starving, she would expect them to feed on her. My neighbour, being pragmatic, said the fuss people made about the person being eaten was blown out of proportion. She argued animals are mainly meat eaters and that’s what a cat or a dog would do.

I agree but still, it’s an undignified exit. But surely someone would notice you’re missing and raise the alarm before things got that far? My friend Fred works as a cleaner and he remembers getting some complaints about a smell coming from a particular unit. He got permission from the landlord to investigate and it turned out a woman had died a few days ago. Further investigation revealed her employer had been trying to get in touch with her. This woman didn’t have any pets but I wonder how often someone does die, no one notices they’re missing and their pets end up eating them? And what about the pet? Would it feel guilty living off its owner? Or would it think, well, they’re dead anyway and I’ll die if I don’t eat something so I have no choice but to eat them. In a way, it could be argued it’s the ultimate gift an animal lover could give their pet. I mean, if I died and poor Butterscotch was starving, I would expect him to munch on me. It’s giving life to someone else a la organ donation.

Interesting post. It is animal instinct to survive. Just as it is human instinct to survive and if we were trapped in the middle of nowhere with just our pets we would eat them and nobody would bat an eyelash.

The problem is nobody wants somebody to find their dead corpse half eaten as you say its undignified. But you can't blame the animal for that.

There was a whole sex in the City episode about that where Miranda over fed her cat in case she died and nobody found her until her cat eaten her.

Sara, thanks for your interesting comments. An extension of your point is that animals are put down every day and no one seems to care but as soon as a person is euthanised, there's a huge outcry of murder. It seems animal deaths don't count.

Sure, I'd let my pet eat me. It'd be horrible if you were just paralyzed, though, and your pets went after you... ick.

Of course, it'd be more dignified if you had a big, powerful pet, like a lion, or a crocodile.

I don't think you would really care if you were dead I think Fido should feast away.

Hi Dont know which country you are from, but people dying and not being found for months or years is an increasingly "normal" situation in Sydney, Australia, funnily enough mainly it is old people living in so called Govt Funded accommodation..very sad, and if they did have pets they would have died as well having run out of food after eating their owners...

This is the most hilarious post I have read in donkey's years.

I remember reading about some person dying and they found their pet, a small breed, can't remember which one, had lay down next to them and died too, without any attempt to eat them.

Maybe it gets down to how emotionally attached and how 'humanised' the pet is, many pets are surrogate children anyway, "fur kids" they call them.

Also, there was that woman in France I think, who became the world's first face transplant, after her face had been eaten off by her devoted pet, who was trying to wake her from a coma.

Luckily, the very risky operation worked, and she looks like a different person now, but, she has a face again and is very happy.

cheers

Hahaha. Good stuff!

I guess I'd let my pet eat me, but I'm not sure if my pet would be too happy with what it's eating. Maybe before I die, I'd teach it how to use the stove and make a good marinate.

Oh my god, with the amount of medications I take any pets would get high after a nibble or two and then finish me off when it gave them the munchies bahahaha!

"Dude, have you tried the human? She tastes just like chicken. What a buzz man, pass me a wing....got any BBQ sauce..."

Great post!

I wouldn't eat my dog if he died and I wouldn't want my dog to eat me. What is wrong with puppy chow for goodness sake?

To Anonynmous - Good point. I live in Sydney and I do read about such stories in the paper. There was only one the other day about an elderly person who was only found after they had been dead for a year. Very sad.

Michaelie - Thanks.

Mountain Fog - What a beautiful story. Thanks for sharing.

Always 18, Cheryl J and Smooth Political - LOL.

Everyone, thanks for visiting.

A pet should not go a day without food. For the owner to just leave their pet to starve so much to where they will eat their own owner, then I would call that animal cruelty and that the owner should be punished. It's not the pets fault if it eats it's own owner because if it goes a certain time period without food, it will do anything to survive.

Now let me think...
Is it better for the dog to eat me or is it better of the worms to eat me?

Or if the dog does eat me is it okay for me to possess the dog?

I would happily starve to death before eating ANY of my animals, and if it was the apocalypse, and I could save a whole group of people with the flesh from my colts body, I would happily barbeque the people and see if I could teach a horse to be a carnivore.

I would not blame them if they had to eat me. Id want them to - its just a body after all, and most people get far too attached to them. Personally, Im already wondering what my new model will look like. Damn I hope I get to be a bloke next time.

A Swan Hill drover went on a binge drinking session for a week. When he got back to his camp he let his droving dogs off their chain and they ate him. As a kid I thought it was fair enough. As an adult I think it was fair enough.
